Hair transplant in Turkey: FUE, DHI and the questions that matter

Istanbul is one of the busiest places in the world for hair transplants. Prices are low and many clinics are very experienced. The quality still varies a lot from one clinic to the next, mostly because of who does the work.

FUE and DHI in plain words

Both methods take hair follicles one by one from the back or sides of your head and place them where the hair has thinned.

  • FUE. The team first makes small openings in the recipient area, then places the follicles into them. "Sapphire FUE" means the openings are made with a sapphire blade instead of a steel one.
  • DHI. Each follicle is loaded into a pen-like tool and implanted directly, without openings made in advance. It is often used for smaller areas or for adding density.

Neither is better for everyone. The right method depends on how much area needs covering and on your donor hair.

What it typically costs

A hair transplant in Turkey typically costs between $1,400 and $2,900. In the UK the usual range is $5,800 to $12,000, and in the US $8,000 to $20,000. Many Turkish clinics price the whole session as a package that includes the hotel and airport transfers. See our cost comparison for more countries.

The question that matters most: who does it?

In high-volume clinics, technicians often do much of the work and the doctor only supervises. Ask clearly:

  1. Which doctor is responsible for my procedure, and what is their name?
  2. Which steps does the doctor do personally: the hairline design, the extraction, the openings, the implanting?
  3. How many patients does the clinic treat on the same day?
  4. Will a doctor assess my donor area before I travel, or only when I arrive?
  5. How many grafts do you plan, and what happens if my donor area cannot give that many?

What to expect afterwards

Most people stay two or three days. The transplanted hairs commonly fall out in the first weeks, which is a normal part of the process, and new growth follows over the next months. The final result usually takes 9 to 12 months to show. Ask the clinic how they follow up once you are home.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Only a doctor who has examined you can tell you whether a transplant suits you and which method to use.
