Planning a treatment trip to Istanbul: how many days you need

Most of the stress in travelling for treatment comes from not knowing how long things take. Here is a realistic outline so you can book flights and time off with some confidence. Your clinic will confirm the exact schedule for your case.

How long to stay

TreatmentTypical stay
Veneers or crownsAbout 5 to 7 days, in one trip
Dental implantsTwo trips of a few days each, three to six months apart
Hair transplantAbout 2 to 3 days

Surgical aesthetic procedures need longer, and the surgeon decides when it is safe for you to fly home. Do not book a return flight for surgery until the clinic has confirmed the date.

Before you fly

  • Get the plan in writing. A dated treatment plan and an itemised quote, with the clinic's name on it.
  • Check entry rules. Visa rules depend on your passport. Check Turkey's official e-Visa website before you book.
  • Tell the clinic about your health. Medication, allergies and existing conditions can change the plan.
  • Leave a spare day. Lab work sometimes runs late. A day of slack before your return flight saves a lot of worry.
  • Sort out travel insurance. Standard policies often exclude planned treatment abroad. Read the exclusions.

While you are there

Istanbul has two airports, on opposite sides of the city. Ask the clinic which one is closer and whether the transfer is included. Many clinics include the hotel and an interpreter, but not all do, so check your quote. Keep every document you are given: x-rays, the implant passport, material certificates and receipts.

The first week at home

Some swelling, sensitivity or discomfort is common after dental or surgical treatment. Before you leave, ask the clinic which symptoms are normal, which ones mean you should contact them, and who answers messages at the weekend. If you have severe pain, bleeding that does not stop or a fever, get medical help where you are and inform the clinic.
